Another all-too-common UI flaw among early flashcard applications, as well as applications in every category on the App Store, were unnecessarily small buttons. My feeling is that if an application has buttons that need to be pressed very often, these buttons should have a big fat target area so that the user never misses them. For many years, we have watched TV episodes and movies debut future technology like this. For example, many of these episodes and movies have shown people talking on small, portable phones and having video conversations. Even The Jetsons cartoon in the 1970s had this as a future concept. The iPod touch makes that future thinking a reality today.

This goes for the little Info button that comes with the iPhone API, too. The area of this button is just too small for many users by default. Luckily, there is a simple remedy for this: put a big clear UIButton on top of it in Interface Builder. I think this is widely done now. Before making an iPhone application, it s obviously a good idea to check out what else is already in the App Store and make sure that you re making a new contribution. My own experience tells me that even if you see others going for the same functionality, if they don t get the UI right, the market is still there for the taking. FaceTime is the featured app highlighted in many of Apple s iPhone and iPod touch commercials. Essentially, FaceTime is free over Wi-Fi calling that allows you to see the caller on the other end of the conversation through the phone s front-facing camera. NOTE: For now FaceTime is only available on the New iPhone 4 and the newest iPod touch devices running iOS 4.1 and higher, and it s only available over a Wi-Fi network.

As with the background drawing, the game over state just uses graphic panels as sprites to display each game ending. If gGameOver is 0, the game drops into the else state, and you draw the actual game modes. If the user is in combat, the gCombatPage variable overrides the drawing and displays the results of the last shot. If not, the game does a switch based on gGameMode and draws the display and buttons for each mode.
