Thumb is extremely expensive, so having Compile for Thumb turned on in a piece of code that s floating-point intensive will crush your performance. When I learned about this during the development of Enigmo, I immediately turned the Compile for Thumb option off to see what would happen. I got an instant 20 percent speedup in the game s frame rate. Enigmo is especially floating-point intensive because of the complex collision detection, so that game really benefited from this simple action. You can turn Thumb on or off for different source files. So, if you have a source file that s mostly just integer operations or code that isn t performance oriented (like, say, your file I/O code), then you can tell Xcode to compile that source file for Thumb to reduce the amount of RAM that the code will consume. To turn on the Thumb option for specific source files, just select the file in Xcode, do a Get Info on it, and then select the Build tab in the Info dialog boxes. Here you can add compiler flags for the file, and the flag for turning on Thumb is mthumb (see Figure 4-4).

If you were developing a game for the Mac or the PC, you would almost certainly choose the Fastest [-O3] optimization level when compiling your code for distribution. But on the iPhone, it isn t quite that simple of a decision because of the memory constraints; therefore, you might want to choose the Fastest, Smallest [-Os] optimization level because this will generate code that uses less memory. Not only does that shrink your code size down and leave more RAM for your game to use, but once again, it means that the processor will not have to touch as much memory while the code executes, and that can speed things up. The choice between O3 and Os is unlikely to have any perceptible effect on performance, but if you know that your app is very tight on RAM, then use the Os setting to free up some space. If RAM is not a problem in your app, then it s really a subjective call on whether you should use O3 or Os. Try it both ways, and see whether it makes any detectable difference.
