use and approachability, you will find applications full of preferences and configuration choices. Presenting the user with many preferences and options for configuration makes your application seem unnecessarily complicated to the typical user. When presented with an interface that forces them to make many choices, most users will feel confused and decide that the application is too difficult to use. Often, poorly designed applications present an abundance of user interface elements for preferences and configuration or create flows through an application that force users to make frequent but relatively unimportant decisions. Often, the problem is that many of these forced decisions are not what the user really cares about when using the application. These unnecessary decisions just get in the way of what the user really wants to accomplish with the software. While many hobbyists and computer professionals crave complete control over their software, most consumers would rather have an application that just works how they expect without the need to make changes to the application behavior. The iPhone OS even obfuscates preference setting by stashing user preferences for an application in a location that few people even realize exists (see Figure 7-4).

When you connect your iPod touch to your computer the first time, your Windows computer should automatically install the necessary drivers. If you are on a Mac computer, you may see messages recommending you upgrade to the latest version of the operating system before using your iPod touch. Follow the steps shown on the screen to complete the process. To see the setup screen, you may need to click iPod touch under DEVICES in the left nav bar. Then you should see the new iPod Wecome screen, as shown in Figure 1 3.

Not all MPEG-4 files are created equal, however. You may want your music to sound the best it can by setting the export settings to Stereo with a high bit rate. Yes, that will make the music sound great if the user is wearing earphones, but it will be at a high cost to performance. My game Cro-Mag Rally plays stereo, 128 Kbps music, and the cost of playing it is around 10 percent, but I figured the game could handle that speed hit, so I kept it at that high quality. Some of my larger games, such as Nanosaur 2 and Bugdom 2, really pushed the CPU to its limits, so 10 percent was just too much, and therefore I had to cut the quality down. To get back some of the CPU time lost to processing the high-quality music files, you simply need to reduce the data size of the MPEG-4 file. Most people will play the game on their iPhone using the built-in speakers, so there s no point in having the song be stereo. That just creates twice as much work for the sound system to do. High bit rates create more data to be loaded and processed, so reducing the bit rate will significantly reduce the CPU and memory

TIP: Get Moving Quickly without Syncing Anything The first sync to your iPod touch can take a long time (15 minutes or more). If you want to start playing with your new iPod touch right away, uncheck both boxes shown in Figure 1 5 and click Done. Don t worry you can check or uncheck these boxes in iTunes later. The best application interfaces are those that keep preferences to a minimum and make sure that the choices exposed to the user are really those that matter to them. It was once said that every application preference represents a point where the development team could not make a tough choice. It s up to you to make those tough choices on behalf of your users. It s true that sometimes the choices you make will not please everyone. You will, however, make your users (outside that small minority) big fans of your application without them ever realizing why. When you design your application,

It is almost impossible to tell any quality difference on the iPhone s internal speaker, yet this change reduces the song playback hit from 10 percent to a much more reasonable 2 to 3 percent.

CAUTION: Your iPod touch does not have as much memory as your computer, so be careful selecting automatically sync when you have thousands of songs, photos, or videos in your computer iTunes library. 6. To have your photos synced between your computer and your iPod touch, check the box next to Automatically add photos to my iPod and click the drop down menu to adjust the folder location where you store your photos on your computer.
