Before we go any further, we need to consider how to generate URLs for each step we add to the breadcrumbs. For example, if we wanted to link to the account login page, the URL would be /account/login. In this instance, the controller name is account and the action name is login. The simplest solution is to hard-code this URL both in the PHP code (when creating the breadcrumbs) and in the template (when creating hyperlinks). However, hard-coding URLs doesn t give you any flexibility to change the format of the URL. For example, if you decide to move your web application to a subdirectory of your server instead of the root directory, all of your hard-coded URLs would be incorrect.

So, you have a set of pages that need information and a data source to provide it. You know that the Web server will use the information to provide the page s content and influence the way the page displays. You need to tell the page how to retrieve the content from the data source and what to do with it afterward. Does this look like a job for ASP.NET Not quite. While it s true that you ll use ASP.NET to react and work with the information once it has been pulled from a data source, you actually use its sibling technology, ADO.NET, to work directly with the database. Deciding when to use instance methods and when to use static methods is part of the art of object-oriented design, and it takes experience. Static methods impose additional considerations namely, your class must be stateless (a concept described in the following section), which means it can t hold on to any additional information in member variables. If it does, it risks a potential conflict if more than one piece of code uses the component at the same time. As a rule of thumb, use instance methods if you need to be able to create several instances of your class at the same time. For example, instance methods make sense for the SqlConnection class, because you might choose to open a connection to several different databases for one operation. Instance methods are also the best choice if you want to configure an object once and use it several times. For example, the SqlConnection class lets you set the connection string and then open and close the connection as much as needed. On the other hand, consider static methods if your methods perform a single, discrete task that doesn t require any initialization. Examples include the calculations in the Math class, and the business tasks (such as registering a new customer) in a high-level business component.
